Dear District Council of Yankalilla, I write to make the sensible suggestion that the new library & existing buildings are named with obvious and practical thoughtfulness, not something that is 'too way out' or in anyway confusing. Though you are well-intentioned in offering the community the chance to give their input, some suggestions I have seen on site at the library are just unworkable or ridiculous. In addition, I would hope you do not fall prey to the Americanisation of spelling, such as using 'Center' instead of 'Centre'. While community consultation is essential, not all views are equal in the sense that not all suggestions are made by people with the right sort of knowledge or education. Of course, we are all ratepayers and deserve to have a say but I would argue that not all suggestions are valuable or useful. It concerns me that you may decide the name on the basis of the most votes and being wholly democratic in this regard. What if the greatest number of people still make an unworkable or even just slightly ridiculous suggestion? What will you do then? I hope this isn't the case. I hope your job is easy. I do want to make my own suggestion here that the buildings be named: Yankalilla Cultural Centre and Library This name is practical, informative, offers continuity and is not confusing in any way. I offer the following points: 1. Yankalilla - district is the pre-eminent part of the nomenclature which hints also at indigenous/first nations' inclusivity 2. Cultural Centre - central place where many community activities take place for all ages (implied) not just youth 3. and Library - signifying the new addition to current building complex previously known as The Centre I hope that all the councillors and staff will not be swayed by suggestions that have no common sense applied. (And the word 'hub' is inadequate too in my view; too colloquial.) I wish you well with the process, Via Email KP 24/10/21

Depending on what you are planning to use it for if it is for young people only, sure keep the Youth Centre. Labrary. But 'Hub' is a bit pretentious and is used to death now everywhere. Adding Yankalilla to it is kind of exclusive. You have other towns in the mix. Unless it is purely for Yank residents. Stick to the District or Region or "Southern Fleurieu Community Centre" as a whole building. No need to make the name cumbersome by adding " and Library ". Library is there anyway.
