Project update: Community engagement concluded
Community engagement on the naming part of an un-named road at Myponga Beach has now closed. The currently unnamed road at the foreshore of Myponga Beach runs as a crescent, leaving from and returning to Myponga Beach road north of the bridge.
We asked the community for feedback on the proposed names, and feedback was provided here on the Your Say Yankalilla project page and via written submissions, either hard copy or emailed.
How the community participated
Submissions from the community were invited to let Council know which of the five shortlisted names were preferred and most appropriate.
Echidna Crescent
Plover Crescent
Sandy Crescent
Sunset Circle or Crescent
Hewett Crescent
About the proposed names
The first four names listed were put forward by the Myponga Beach Property Owners Group and the fifth name was put forward the Yankalilla District Historical Society who provided the following context:
Selecting 'Hewett Crescent' would name the road after Charles Thomas Hewett, a significant figure for Myponga Beach who settled with his family in the locality in 1854 and built Torr Farm, which was later purchased by the Stacey family. Thomas Hewett was the first chairman of both the Yankalilla District Council and the old Myponga Council.
Our legislative obligations
Under section 219 of the Local Government Act 1999, Council has the power to assign a name to a public road. In accordance with its Road Naming Policy, Council provided notice to the community that it will be assigning a new name to the currently unnamed road at Myponga Beach following community participation in the naming process. The road name will be formally adopted by Council in the new year.
