Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Consultation has concluded
In cities and regional areas, electric vehicle charging blackspots (areas that don't have convenient access to public charging stations) are a growing issue. To address charging gaps across South Australia and to meet growing community demand, Council is working with the RAA to identify suitable locations where different types of EV charging infrastructure can be installed.
RAA, supported by South Australian Government is building South Australia’s first state-wide electric vehicle (EV) charging network, with more than 530 charging points set to be installed across the state by early 2024. Spanning highways, regional centres, shopping centres in the suburbs and the regions, the electric vehicle charging network will make it easier to own and drive an EV in South Australia.
Two preferred sites have been identified in our district:
- Normanville Village Green (carpark - 12 Edwards Avenue) - Rapid Charge (DC)
RAA will remove the existing EV charger, which is at the end of its economic life.
- Hansen Street, Myponga - Fast Charge (AC)
At both locations, upgrades to infrastructure and the installation, ongoing servicing and maintenance costs are fully funded by RAA. You can view the RAA proposal in the document section of this page.
Once operational, the charging stations will be open for public use on a user-pays basis. The fee to charge will be determined by RAA, more information regarding the fee structure can be found here.
We are now seeking your feedback on the proposed EV charging locations, consultation commences Tuesday 11 July 2023 and closes COB Tuesday 1 August 2023. Staff will be onsite at Hansen Street, Myponga on Tuesday 11 July and at the Normanville Village Green on Thursday 13 July from 11:00am to 1:00pm to meet with you to discuss the CLMP and the licence to RAA.

Concurrent consultation
The Community Land Management Plan - Township Reserves requires an amendment to allow for a licence to RAA for the installation and maintenance of EV chargers at Normanville Village Green. You can have your say on the proposed CLMP amendments here.
Is the RAA aware also that not all EVs charge in the front section? The choice of reversing in or fronting in should be up to the driver depending on 1. The model of car. 2. The length of cable available. DC chargers have limited reach so it would be necessary to reverse in a Tesla model 3 for example.
Reversing into charging stations is not a suitable way to do it. Do you have to reverse in to fill a petrol car? So why reverse? In future more EVs will be towing trailers so reversing in is impossible. Hansen st is too narrow for the manoeuvres required for a charging station. Having recently been in Europe, there has been no forethought for the future. It’s not sustainable to have chargers tucked away in side streets as it generates traffic problems as you also need waiting areas. It would be better to have them in a line along part of the Myponga main st so you can drive in and out without reversing!! If you have to reverse then the bornes need protection by bollards which then reduces the space in the street. I think it’s important to think ahead.
