Elector Representation - have we got it right?

Every 8 years council is required by law to undertake a Representation Review to consider the various options available to appropriately represent its community including:

  • altering the composition of the council
  • altering the division of the area of the council via wards and their boundaries, or abolishing wards
  • changing the council’s name and/or the names of the wards

Elector Representation - have we got it right?

Every 8 years council is required by law to undertake a Representation Review to consider the various options available to appropriately represent its community including:

  • altering the composition of the council
  • altering the division of the area of the council via wards and their boundaries, or abolishing wards
  • changing the council’s name and/or the names of the wards

The last time Yankalilla Council conducted a Representation Review was in 2016 when the two current Wards (Field and Light) were retained. As part of this Review we are asking the community to consider changing the name of our council to Fleurieu Coast Council as well as consider the composition of council and its wards and boundaries.

Pursuant to Section 12(7) of the Local Government Act 1999 (the Act), Council has prepared a Representation Report that:

  • examines the advantages and disadvantages available to Council in regard to its future composition and structure, in particular whether the number of members should be reduced, and the question whether the council area should be divided into wards; and
  • sets out the proposal that the Council considers should be carried into effect at the next Local Government elections scheduled in 2026.

In accordance with Section 12(2) and 12(6) of the Local Government Act 1999, the Representation Report examines and sets out a proposal to change the name of the Council to ‘Fleurieu Coast Council’.

We are now seeking feedback on the Representation Review Report and the proposal to change Council's name.

Next steps

Council will consider the community engagement results regarding the Representation Review and Renaming DCY in early 2025. Once Council has made a decision on its proposed approach to the representation structure and renaming the matter will be referred to the Electoral Commissioner of South Australia who will determine whether Council’s proposals are consistent with the requirements of Section 12 of the Local Government Act 1999.

The question "Which town/suburb do you usually reside in?" is a mandatory question where the field will automatically select corresponding town/suburbs once you begin typing. Try typing the name of the town/suburb you usually reside in at it should auto-fill within the field.

When nothing has been typed into the field and you click in the field a drop-down appears that says 'No options' because nothing has been typed yet. We understand this is confusing and we have reported this technical issue.

What would the anticipated costs be of a name change?

Estimated at $10,000, the cost of transitioning DCY to Fleurieu Coast Council is modest.

The work already done to establish the Fleurieu Coast: Made By Nature place brand puts the council in a unique position to align with much of the work already done, making the transition relatively simple.

The initial cost outlay will come from the replacement of signage on the Civic Centre and Library. Township and district entry signage will be updated, not replaced. To reduce waste and cost, corporate assets will be gradually replaced as the need arises.
